Ben Cohen, Wood and Metal Director
Ben joined Powerhouse Arts as Wood and Metal Director in 2020. As an industrial designer, Ben brings to the role accumulated years of experience working with designers and artists, institutions and fabricators on ambitious technical projects. In addition to his experience sourcing, building, maintaining and running workshops with an array of processes, centered around wood and metal, he has also incorporated printmaking, CNC machining, 3D printing and robotics into his projects with the goal of creating artworks, products, and experiences that move beyond the conventional. He is a Co-founder & Director of the non-profit The Gowanus Studio Space, a thriving artist-run studio and workshop that has provided affordable studios and workspace in the neighborhood for the past 11 years.
Luther Davis, Print Shop Director
Luther has been the Master Printer and Director of the Powerhouse Arts Print Program since 2016. Luther teaches printmaking at Parsons School of Design and The Cooper Union. He was the co-founder of Forth Estate, a fine art publisher focused on producing limited editions with emerging artists, and from 1999-2016 he was the Master Printer and Director of Axelle Editions, a fine art print atelier specializing in screen printing that produced over 300 editions a year with more than 100 artists.
Biata Roytburd, Director of Ceramic
Biata is a classically trained sculptor, contributing over ten years of experience in ceramic fabrication and education. She received her BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in 2010. She studied anatomy and sculpture in clay at the Salzburg International Academy of Fine Arts. With a focus on porcelain, she has expertise in various ceramic processes including sculpture, slip casting, mold-making, hand-building, throwing, glazing, and firing. Biata has extensive experience with realizing ambitious site-specific artwork commissions and installations. She describes herself as having a meticulous eye when it comes to her craft and will be continuing her development as a ceramic artist in early March as a Greenwich House Pottery Resident.
Kelsey Knight Mohr, Lead Textile Fabricator
Kelsey has served as Powerhouse Arts Lead Textile Fabricator since 2018. Kelsey has been working collaboratively for over 14 years with both emerging and established artists to realize multimedia artworks for small galleries and major institutions. She has been involved in diverse projects including costumes for trapeze, life-sized replicas of movie sets realized in soft materials, inflatable robots, and finely pleated hand-dyed linen. A Barnard alumnae, she maintains her own sculptural studio practice and sells a small line of handmade furniture with her husband.
Shayna Jeffers, Financial Manager
Brooklyn-born art enthusiast and creator, Shayna has been working in not-for-profit finance and accounting since 2008. As the Financial Manager for Powerhouse, she is able to bridge her experiences in different nonprofit environments with her passion for facilitating opportunities and resources for artists and creatives. Shayna co-founded and works with the Prep in Arts Initiative: an alumni group formed to extend knowledge and provide experiences to the larger Prep for Prep community. She also ran a grassroots organization serving emerging artists and anticipating their needs. She is excited to talk about budgeting and cash flow, financial statements, and expense tracking. She is not a financial or tax advisor.
