Featured Project The Powerhouse Arts Project Management team assembled and installed the first model of Agnes Denes’ Probability Pyramid—Study for Crystal Pyramid from 1976. The sculpture was commissioned by The Shed for the artist’s retrospective exhibition Agnes Denes: Absolutes and Intermediates curated by Emma Enderby, which was on view from October 2019 through March 2020.

The model for Probability Pyramid on view in the exhibition is a variation of the artist’s Crystal Pyramid from 1976. Measuring 22.5 feet wide at its base by 17 feet tall, the sculpture consists of 6,000 3D-printed bricks made of recyclable corn-based translucent plastic. Unlike the Egyptian pyramids with their straight lines from base to apex, the pyramid follows a mathematical formula that results in a gracious probability curve between points. The structure is illuminated from within standing, in the artist’s words, as a “massive edifice with its millions of reflections.”

Powerhouse Arts Director of Production & Fabrication, Art Domantay, oversaw the entire scope of the project, from preliminary designs during his tenure as Senior Exhibitions Producer at The Shed, to assembly and de-installation in his current role at Powerhouse Arts.
